Özyeğin Pilotaj program: questions and answers

Short, sourced answers to the questions students and parents ask us most often.

Updated:
What is the Özyeğin University Pilotaj program?

It is a full-time, 4-year bachelor's program (240 ECTS) for future airline pilots at Özyeğin University's Faculty of Aviation and Aeronautical Sciences in Istanbul. The university teaches the theory and AYJET flight school delivers the flight training under a training protocol.

Which licence do graduates receive?

Graduates are entitled to an ATP(A) "frozen" licence — the Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) route — issued by SHGM, Türkiye's Directorate General of Civil Aviation, together with their bachelor's degree. A frozen ATPL becomes a full ATPL once you build the required airline experience.

Is it an EASA licence?

No. The licence is issued by SHGM (Türkiye). Training follows ICAO rules and EASA modular ATP standards, which makes later conversion easier, but flying for an airline in the EU requires converting the licence under EASA rules, usually with extra exams and checks.

How many flight hours are included?

Students must complete 213 flight hours to graduate, along with 240 ECTS credits, a GPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and the mandatory internships.

Who provides the flight training, and on which aircraft?

AYJET Anadolu Yıldızları Uçuş Okulu, based at Hezarfen Airport in Istanbul. In August 2026 AYJET reported a fleet of 45 aircraft: 26 Diamond DA20, 11 Sonaca S201, 6 twin-engine Diamond DA42 and 2 Zlin Z242L, plus simulators including Diamond DA40/DA42 and Boeing 737NG devices.

Is the program taught in English?

Yes. All instruction is in English. Students whose English is below Özyeğin's threshold first study in the university's English Preparatory Program, which can add a year.

How do Turkish citizens get in?

Through the national YKS exam with a SAY score. In the 2025 placement the paid (ücretli) program had 48 places with a base ranking of about 305,000; the full-scholarship (burslu) program had 7 places with a base ranking of about 1,650 (YÖK Atlas data via Kariyer.net).

Can international students apply?

Yes. International applicants apply directly to Özyeğin University with an ÖzU-YÖS or equivalent exam score, or with their high school grades. Quotas are published every year by ÖSYM. We tell you which route fits your country and diploma.

Which medical certificate do I need, and when?

A valid SHGM Class 1 medical certificate from an aeromedical centre authorised by SHGM, with no limitation that would stop you flying as pilot-in-command on a single-pilot aircraft. It is required at registration, so plan it early.

Is there a route to an airline job?

Özyeğin and Pegasus Airlines signed a protocol under which Pilotaj students who pass Pegasus's selection during their studies can be accepted into type-rating training after graduation, to be trained as second officers. According to the university, Pegasus covers the flight-school fee, the type-rating cost and a training allowance, repaid once the pilot starts working. Places depend on the airline's selection.

How long does it take?

Four years of full-time study. If you need the English Preparatory Program, add up to one year before the bachelor's courses start.
